Abacus Edutech was founded by its two directors, Joe and Paul, who first met as undergraduates at the University of Birmingham in 1998. Joe graduated with a BSc (Hons) in Mathematical Sciences (2:1) and an MSc in Computer Science (Distinction), while Paul earned a BSc (Hons) in Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence (2:1).
After graduating, Joe spent two years working in software development before completing his PGCE in Secondary Education at Oxford Brookes University. He then began his career in education as a mathematics teacher, progressing through roles including Head of Maths, Assistant Headteacher, and ultimately Deputy Headteacher.
During the same period, Paul built extensive experience across software development, consultancy, and technical architecture. He has delivered a wide range of projects for major high street brands, as well as clinical systems for the Department of Health.
Through his senior leadership experience in schools, Joe identified significant gaps in how SEND departments were supported by existing IT systems. In collaboration with Paul, these challenges were translated into practical, scalable solutions, combining educational insight with technical expertise.
In January 2022, with a clear vision and a fully realised design for their first web-based application, TA Timetabler, Abacus Edutech was established. The company’s mission is to support schools, empower SEND departments, and ultimately improve outcomes for pupils.
Since its launch in spring 2023, TA Timetabler has continued to evolve into a robust, mature platform. It is now used by hundreds of schools across England, Wales, Northern Ireland, and the Channel Islands, and remains the UK’s first web-based application dedicated to the efficient scheduling of teaching assistants.
